Following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash earlier this month, Iran’s Guardian Council, which is in charge of elections and legislation, has authorised six candidates to run for president in early elections that will take place later this month, according to a report from Iran’s State TV on Sunday, June 9. “With the announcement of the final list of candidates, their electoral activities start officially,” state TV said.
Reportedly, the election is due to take place on June 28.
Who are these six candidates?
According to State TV, the individuals on the list include a conservative, former chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, who previously ran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s office for four years. Next in the list is Tehran’s conservative mayor, Alireza Zakani. Iran’s hardline parliament speaker and a former Revolutionary Guards commander, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf is also in the list.
A representative for the Election Office revealed the list on State TV. It included three other politicians, Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, a conservative, Mostafa Pourmohammadi, a hardliner and former interior minister, and reformist lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian.
Interestingly, hardline former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and well-known conservative former parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani were disqualified by the Council, according to state media.
