The late Queen Elizabeth is said to have made brutal comment about the now-Duchess of Edinburgh when they first met.

Prince Edward met Sophie back in July 1993, with their royal wedding taking place six years later.

Although the pair later had a very close bond, the MailOnline reports that the late Queen is to have said, “You wouldn’t pick her out of a crowd”, after first meeting her future daughter-in-law.

Sophie, who recently celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with Prince Edward, has now become the “worthiest of partners” for the late Queen’s youngest son.

Author Tina Brown previously said that the late Queen wasn’t hugely impressed with Sophie at the start, but her opinion soon changed.

Friends of the late monarch said that the Queen began to like the effect that Sophie had on her son.

According to MailOnline, Sophie made Edward “more relaxed and less brittle”, which led the late royal to begin to like her. She also respected Sophie’s “lack of pretension”.

Royal expert Ingrid Seward, said Sophie and the late Queen’s close bond began to blossom through the years, and the late monarch would allow her to “come and go as she pleased”.

Speaking in the 2020 Channel 5 documentary ‘Edward & Sophie: The Reluctant Royals’, Ms Seward said: “The Queen decided that she wanted Sophie to understand what marrying into the Royal Family meant.

Sophie donned a stunning emerald green evening gown, which she paired up with the Lotus Flower Tiara – a loan from Queen Camilla.

The tiara sparked major fan frenzy as Sophie has never worn one before, with one fan taking to X to comment: “Sophie looks so major. Is it okay for me to say it was high time she was loaned big tiaras and gems? She looks absolutely regal.

“Her papa must be so proud of her. She’s beautiful and all those sparklies suit her perfectly.”
