Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is out of contract in the summer and fans are concerned.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has given a worrying update on his future at Anfield.

The Dutchman is going into his second season as Reds skipper but it could well be his final one as his contract is due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Last month, Van Dijk, a £75 million signing from Southampton in the 2017/18 season, said he didn’t have “the slightest idea” about his future and would need to “think carefully” about his next steps.

He has been getting to grips to life under new manager Arne Slot and played in the first of two friendlies on Sunday, a 4-1 win over Sevilla.

Van Dijk spoke to the media afterwards and was asked about contract talks, confirming that there hadn’t been any movement.

“There is no changes at the moment,” he told reporters, as per The Independent.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah are also in the final 12 months of their deals, while a huge concern in the current window has been Liverpool’s lack of activity in the transfer market.

Liverpool are the only Premier League club yet to make a signing, though they are trying to do a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Van Dijk thinks new additions are needed given the amount of games in store for the squad but is trusting in the club’s approach.

He added: “Obviously I think we should make some signings based on how long the season will go but I think they are working behind the scenes and I am fully convinced and trust the club that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in.

“That is the main thing I am focusing on, having the trust and we will see what happens. I think they are working very hard behind the scenes, we will see how that pans out.”
