Prince William's major Kate request denied by the Queen

Prince William reportedly had a huge request denied by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, after marrying Kate Middleton in 2011. The now-Princess of Wales may have several royal titles to her name, but William had one special name in mind that he hoped he could give his bride.

According to the Telegraph, after his wedding, William hoped to continue using Prince William as his name, instead of the Duke of Cambridge, and he wanted Kate to become Princess Catherine. However, the Queen was not in favour of this.

“He says he was born Prince William and wants to continue to be known as that,” a courtier told the publication. “He wants Kate to become Princess Catherine.”

Princesses usually receive their titles at birth, not through marriage. Royal historian Kenneth Rose revealed that the Queen has made exceptions in the past but was unlikely to do so for Kate.

“Kate is a commoner and could not be known as ‘Princess Catherine’,” Rose said. “However, it is up to the Queen what title she gives her and there have been one or two exceptions.”

“When Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester died, the Queen gave the Duchess of Gloucester the title Princess Alice. This was, though, to reward her for years of loyal service.”

“If this happened, I am pretty certain that Princess Michael of Kent, for example, would ask to become Princess Marie-Christine. I should think that there will be some pressure put on him [William] not to change the system.”

After their wedding, Kate became Princess William of Wales, the feminine form of William’s title, as well as the Duchess of Cambridge, which was more commonly used. Through her marriage, she also became the Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Chester, Countess of Carrick and Baroness of Renfrew. After the Queen’s passing, she inherited the title of Duchess of Cornwall.

When the Queen died and Charles ascended the throne, William took his father’s title of Prince of Wales, and Kate became Catherine, The Princess of Wales.

William and Kate’s three children George, Charlotte and Louis now use the surname Wales at school after previously going by Cambridge. The kids also affectionally call Charles ‘Grandpa Wales’, a nod to his former title.
