A number of upsets last week shuffled things at the top of the college football world, and that was during a week that looked uninteresting on paper. This week features a number of big games that will have a big impact on the rest of the season, and there is always the chance for more upsets.
The top-ranked Texas Longhorns get their first big test against an SEC opponent, but it’s against an old rival in Oklahoma. The Longhorns are two-touchdown favorites against the Sooners, which have been mostly unimpressive so far this season. Both teams are coming off bye weeks and Texas is expected to have Quinn Ewers return as starting quarterback after Arch Manning filled in the past couple weeks.
The big game in primetime is Ohio State traveling to the West Coast to take on Oregon. The Ducks haven’t been tested in Big Ten play yet, comfortably winning at UCLA and against Michigan State at home. The Buckeyes haven’t had a close game at all. OSU is favored by less than a touchdown.
In the new Big Ten, teams traveling at least two time zones are 1-8 in conference games. The only win belongs to Indiana at UCLA and the Bruins haven’t been competitive against a power conference team yet with four straight losses by at least 16 points. Is this trend coincidence or a warning sign for the Buckeyes?
Speaking of Big Ten teams traveling multiple time zones, Penn State heads to USC and is favored by less than a touchdown. The Trojans have lost both road trips in the Big Ten so far in the last minute (at Michigan and last week at Minnesota). The shine has worn off USC since a Week 1 win against LSU. Can Lincoln Riley’s team get a steadying victory or will Penn State notch a quality road win to go against the West Coast trend?
There is another top-15 matchup in the SEC when LSU hosts Ole Miss. Both teams have losses, making this a crucial game for the playoff hopes of both teams. Ole Miss is favored by a field goal on the road.
Five AP Top 25 teams are on bye this week: No. 6 Miami, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 18 Indiana, No. 24 Michigan and No. 25 SMU.
