Legendary quarterback Tom Brady, the GOAT of the NFL, recently dropped a hilarious bombshell: he chose football over baseball because-wait for it-he thought football was safer. Yes, you read that right.
In a lighthearted chat with Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, Brady revealed that his teenage self was convinced that the NFL was the less painful path. Brady had serious potential as a baseball player and was even drafted by the Montreal Expos back in 1995 as a catcher straight out of high school.
But catching pitches took a toll. “Baseball actually made me sore,” Brady laughed, explaining how the crouching and throwing hurt his knees and elbow. In true Brady fashion, he decided the gridiron-where 300-pound men collide at full speed-was the safer bet.
In an interview a couple of year ago, the New England Patriots star joked that had he stuck with baseball, “I’d be selling insurance, man. Baseball was not my sport.” Considering he went on to win seven Super Bowl rings, it’s safe to say Brady chose wisely, even if his logic is still up for debate.
What about the “dad-bod”?
Brady and Mahomes had this playful chat ahead of Sunday’s Chiefs vs. 49ers game-a rematch after the Chiefs crushed San Francisco in last season’s Super Bowl. The conversation wasn’t all serious, though.
Mahomes cracked a joke about his so-called “dad bod,” explaining how his oblique workouts help his famous sidearm throws. “The people who have seen the dad bod, that’s for a reason-that’s the obliques. I’m getting them right” he quipped, causing Brady to laugh and admit, “We’ve got to keep a little padding-we’re getting hit all the time.”
Brady and Mahomes connected by baseball
The two football stars also shared a mutual love for baseball. While Brady left the sport behind in high school, Mahomes is still connected as a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals. Their banter made it clear that while they may not have become baseball legends, they’re more than happy with where they ended up.
With a Dodgers vs. Yankees showdown on the horizon, fans are hyped-not just for the game, but also to see if Mahomes and Brady share more laughs about their would-be baseball careers.
