Angel Reese came to revolutionize the WNBA. The Chicago Sky forward broke records left and right in her first year in the league, proving she was a force to be reckoned with, especially under the backboard. Despite this, Reese keeps her feet on the ground, aware that the team comes first.

Reese wasted no time marking her territory on the professional courts. The Sky star became a dominant force under the boards, breaking the record for most consecutive double-doubles previously held by the legendary Candace Parker with 15.

The former LSU Tiger also briefly held the record for most rebounds in a single season, reaching 446. However, a wrist injury prevented her from increasing the number, and A’ja Wilson snatched the distinction from her by reaching 451 for the campaign.

But Reese doesn’t let individual accomplishments distract her. In a recent interview with Athlon Sports, the “Chi-Barbie” said, “I’m truly not focused on my individual accolades,” and made it clear, “I’m always focused on our team and what we need to do collectively to win.”

Her relationship with Shaq

Reese also spoke about the special bond that unites her with four-time NBA championShaquille O’Neal. “Shaq and I have always had a great relationship since the day we met, and he has been such a mentor to me both on and off the court,” Angel said.

The Sky forward knew Shaq from her college days. The former Los Angeles Lakers center became her guide and mentor, sharing all kinds of advice with her-not only as a basketball player but as a businessman.

“He reminds me that I need to stay focused on basketball, but I should always be developing my off-court businesses too,” Reese said. “He’s a true businessman and has helped me develop that same business mindset.”

New challenges for Reese

The Sky’s season ended without them securing a ticket to the playoffs. However, Reese is already preparing to take on a new challenge as part of the Unrivaled 3-on-3 basketball league, which tipoffs in January 2025.

Regarding this new adventure, Reese said, “I’m excited for the league’s first season! It’s amazing to be a part of a league that gives equity to players. I’m looking forward to playing with the best athletes and really using the time to focus on my game and getting better too.

Despite being only 22 years old, Reese is showing the maturity of a veteran. If the young Sky star can maintain this mentality, it is almost certain that she will soon lead her team to the postseason that was denied to her last year.
