Boston College Football All-22 Film Review: Offense vs. Virginia Tech (Week 8)

Dear Reader, I will be completely upfront with you: this would be so much easier to write if the Boston College offense was utterly inept and ineffective. But it’s not, which makes this so hard to write. Offensive coordinator Will Lawing is drawing up some good plays, and the players often execute them well. However, turnovers by Thomas Castellanos (particularly in the form of fumbles) and inconsistent playcalling repeatedly sink this entire offense. Will Lawing is making some confusing decisions and not doing enough to make life easier for the offense. Other position groups could stand to execute better, but until Lawing improves and the turnover issues are solved, it won’t really matter.

Ultimately, BC had some good plays, even in the first half, that allowed them to move the ball. But there were many more bad plays; those bad plays were also generally more bad than the good plays were good. That said, I believe many of the Eagles’ issues can be fixed with some coaching adjustments and more focus on protecting the football. Furthermore, there is proof that Will Lawing can make some good playcalls; he just needs to perform more consistently, which will the primary question to monitor in the second half of the season.
