The Chargers believe they need more than the three healthy quarterbacks on their roster to be adequately prepared for the 2024 regular season which spurred them on to workout a pair of passers during Monday’s practice. One of them apparently stood out enough to Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz which earned him a spot with the Bolts.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Chargers announced the signing former XFL and UFL quarterback Luis Perez. Dubbed “The King of Spring” due to how long he’s been working the spring football circuit, Perez is coming off the inaugural United Football League season in which he led the league in passing yards (2,309), completions (225), and passing touchdowns (18). The previous season, he helped lead the Arlington Renegades to the XFL Championship after being traded from the Las Vegas Vipers over halfway into the schedule.

Perez was coached in Arlington by former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops. His quarterback coach and offensive coordinator was Chuck Long, a former Heisman runner-up in the mid-80s who played against Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines from 1983-1985.

For those who want to get acquainted quickly with the Chargers’ newest quarterback, here’s a short highlight video from his recent UFL season:
