The Week 5 Big 12 college football attendance numbers came in after this weekend’s games and it was a strong showing across the board for the Big 12 Conference as most teams got their conference seasons underway.

There were three teams that reached the 100% capacity threshold, which is going to become more common as we start conference play. However, there were a couple of teams that did not come even close.

Here are the numbers.

Big 12 Football Week 5 Attendance (Percentage capacity in parenthesis)

  1. Texas Tech vs. Cincinnati: 60,229 (100%)
  2. Utah vs. Arizona: 52,898 (102.8%)
  3. Kansas State vs. Oklahoma State: 51,741 (103%)
  4. Kansas vs. TCU: 47,928 (62%)*
  5. UCF vs. Colorado: 45,702 (95.2%)
  6. Baylor vs. BYU: 39,583 (79%)
  7. Houston vs. Iowa State: 25,138 (63%)

Texas Tech fans continue to show up and show out for Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders. Last week, Texas Tech hit 98% on its attendance vs. Arizona State. Lubbock has always been a special place to watch a game and experience college football, and with Tech off to a solid 4-1 start, expect even more rowdy crowds in West Texas.

Utah was another program to top 100% capacity as they hosted Arizona in an old Pac-12, now Big 12, match up. Meantime, Kansas State blowing out its capacity against Oklahoma State should not surprise any longtime Big 12 fan, given the quality of game these two teams have played against each other over the years.

On the downside, Baylor didn’t crack the 80% capacity number for its Big 12 home opener vs. BYU. That’s not a good sign. And based on some of the photos of the stands, that 79% might be generous. Kansas had a strong showing at Arrowhead Stadium (capacity 76,000), so the percentage isn’t as relevant. KU is playing some home games there this season as it renovates Memorial Stadium. And Houston’s struggles continue, given where the program is at in Year 1 under Willie Fritz.
