College sports: Durant leads Mavericks to volleyball win

MANKATO — Kiya Durant had nine kills and tied a season-high with seven blocks as Minnesota State defeated Mary 20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball match Saturday at Bresnan Arena.

Avery Klein tied her career-high with 13 kills, and Toryn Richards had 12 kills and 13 digs. Emma Loveall added 11 kills and three blocks and served three aces. Brooke Bolwerk totaled 32 assists and served three aces.

Minnesota State (13-3, 5-3 in Northern Sun) plays at Sioux Falls on Thursday.

Women’s hockey: Whitney Tuttle scored two goals for the Mavericks in a 3-2 WCHA loss to St. Thomas at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

Tuttle’s second goal tied the game 2-2 at 19:01 of the second. The Tommies scored the game-winning goal at 19:37 of the third.

Shots on goal favored the Mavericks 26-17.

MSU (2-2, 0-2 in WCHA) will play Minnesota on Oct. 25-26.

Gustavus Adolphus

Football: Jake Breitbach became the Gusties’ all-time leading receiver in a 51-13 victory over St. Scholastica at Hollingsworth Stadium.

Breitbach has 3,310 yards receiving, which ranks sixth in MIAC history.

Jacob Ginskey completed 15 of 25 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns in his first college start. Breitbach had seven catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The Gusties had 588 yards of offense, with 271 yards rushing. River Wood had 187 yards and two touchdowns, and he caught four passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Taylor Stroh and Jack Klug each made seven tackles, while Max Olson had two sacks and Nolan Perry made an interception.

Gustavus (3-2) plays at Macalester on Saturday.

Women’s soccer: St. Benedict’s scored in the 83rd minute to defeat the Gusties 1-0 in an MIAC match at St. Joseph.

The Gusties had eight shots on goal, while goalkeeper Katelyn Olson made four saves.

Gustavus (6-4-3, 1-4-1 in MIAC) will host St. Catherine on Wednesday.

Volleyball: Lauren Klaith made 14 kills, and Sophia Deyak added 12 kills and four blocks as the No. 25 Gusties defeated Hamline 25-19, 25-23, 28-26 in an MIAC match at Gus Young Court.

Kasie Tweet made 36 assists, and Maren Sundberg had 20 digs.

Gustavus (12-9, 5-0) plays Concordia on Wednesday at Moorhead.

Bethany Lutheran

Women’s soccer: Bella Garza scored four goals in the second half as the Vikings defeated North Central 10-0 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match at Scheels Field.

Riley Ping scored two goals, and Juliana Correa Paez, Olaitz Azkue Muguruza, Elana Lujan Rubio and Ashley Casper each scored a goal.

Ema Cortes Carvalho made three saves in the shutout.

Bethany will play at Martin Luther on Wednesday.

Men’s soccer: Guilherme Gancho three goals as Bethany picked up an 8-0 UMAC win over North Central at Scheels Field.

Raffaele Carpani added two goals, and Daniel Almeida, Anastasis Daskalakis and Cameron Brookfield each scored one.

Nick Lundberg got the win in net, making two saves.

Bethany (7-5-2, 6-1-1) will play at Martin Luther on Wednesday.

Volleyball: Riley Sammon made 10 kills as the Vikings won 25-14, 25-13, 25-13 over Northland in a UMAC match at Ashland, Wisconsin.

Maddie Meyer and Lilly Mehrkens each had nine kills, and Abby Distad made 26 assists. Kylie Smidt served four aces.

Bethany (9-12, 2-5) plays at Martin Luther on Tuesday.
