HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – People from across the state came to central Nebraska on Saturday for Hastings’ first-ever ‘Walk Out of Darkness’. The goal of the event is to bring awareness to mental health and suicide prevention. Members of the Hasting community led organizing efforts for the event.

Grace Manley, the Nebraska Area Director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said several members in the Hastings community wanted this event to come to the area.

Manley shared a message to the public about suicide and mental health.

“Suicide does not discriminate,” said Manley. “If you have a brain, you have a body; you’re going to experience mental health just like you do physical health, and unfortunately suicide can be something that can happen to person. So it’s very important to be able to know those preventive and protective factors that we can put into place to help to protect communities.”

Several attendees brought a photo of a loved one they’ve lost to suicide, and they were able to display it on some netting.
