Why it wasn’t Harris, despite what the media says” (Letters to the Editor, SFChronicle.com, Sept. 12): I’m disappointed the Chronicle published a letter from someone from New Jersey who thinks Kamala Harris shouldn’t react to nonsense spewed by a former president who helped try to stage a coup.
To have watched Tuesday’s presidential debate and concluded that Harris needs to learn to control her emotions and “her facial expressions” when Donald Trump was just as animated and agitated is misogynistic.
Who didn’t make a face when Trump mentioned “transgender operations on illegal aliens” and immigrants eating cats and dogs (which was racist)?

Men should smile more and fact-check before coming after qualified women forced to compete with chauvinistic, bigoted men.

Nice job by moderators
Regarding “Who won the debate? Why it wasn’t Harris, despite what the media says” (Letters to the Editor, SFChronicle.com, Sept. 12): I take issue with complaints that the media is unfair to Donald Trump.
If we scroll back to 2016, the media was so fascinated with Trump that he got billions worth of free public relations from the media. Who knows if that is what gave him the election?

I think the moderators did a good job in Tuesday’s presidential debate, especially calling out Trump on the crazy stuff he was spouting.
Yes, the moderators probably could have held Kamala Harris’ feet to the fire a few times, but it was basically a balanced approach.
Down goes Trump
Regarding “Donald Trump lashes out often in ferocious presidential debate” (Politics, SFChronicle.com, Sept. 10): Tuesday’s presidential debate reminded me of a popular song from the late-’60s — “Harper Valley PTA,” about a single mother and the hypocrisy of other parents attacking her way of bringing up her child.

Similarly, Kamala Harris revealed the hypocrisy of the former president and his lackeys during the debate. The most memorable line in the song, “The day my mama socked it to/ The Harper’s Valley PTA,” is also a fitting way to describe the debate.
For many Democrats, Sept.10, 2024, will be remembered as the day Harris socked it to Donald Trump.
GOP is a failure
Regarding “Donald Trump lashes out often in ferocious presidential debate” (Politics, SFChronicle.com, Sept. 10): Tuesday’s presidential debate is a clear indication that the Republican Party is lost.

Its presidential candidate shows a worsening disregard for the needs of Americans. What is most appalling, is the demented talk of this candidate, on immigrants in Ohio eating the pets.
This talk went on and on, despite a moderator fact-checking that it was false. I find this another example of a real downturn for our democracy. We need two vital political parties that care about governing.

The only reason this GOP candidate has a following is because he promises a deep tax cut for wealthier citizens. This should not be the reason to have a president who otherwise is failing as a candidate. The GOP is failing our country the longer he continues to lead it.
More importantly, half of registered voters are independent, which indicates a need for a new party. We deserve better representation.
