HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The HNN Investigates series “Hope for Hawaii Island” has been awarded the 2024 Mental Health America (MHA) Media Award for the Broadcast category.
The series, from HNN investigative reporter Allyson Blair, follows psychiatrist Dr. Chad Koyanagi and his team as they spotlight the increasing need for mental health support in local communities.
Koyanagi is the only psychiatrist in Hawaii who takes his practices outside the office onto the streets to help those who are homeless and suffering.
Data shows that Hawaii Island’s homeless population increased by 45% in just five years, and half that population is in desperate need of psychiatric services.
Koyanagi travels from Oahu to Hawaii Island biweekly to lead Hawaii Island’s largest homeless service provider, Hope Services’ new psychiatric street medicine program.
Koyanagi and the street medicine team have treated countless patients over the last two decades. Prescribing psychiatric medication has allowed patients to regain control over their lives and move off the streets.
HNN’s investigative series dives into the team’s promising efforts to slowly improve the homeless mental health crisis.
