Netflix to stream 2 NFL games on Christmas Day

There’s a new Christmas tradition brewing: The NFL’s two Christmas Day games in 2024 will stream on Netflix, the streaming giant announced Wednesday.

As part of a three-season deal, the streaming platform will broadcast at least one Christmas Day game in 2025 and 2026, too.

Netflix did not announce the teams for the Christmas Day doubleheader. The NFL will release its full schedule on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year. The doubleheader will be the first NFL games on a Wednesday since 2020, when COVID-19 forced the league to reschedule a matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

The NFL has only played one other Wednesday game since 1948; it rescheduled a 2012 Dallas Cowboys–New York Giants game to a Wednesday to avoid competing with then-President Barack Obama’s scheduled speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Last season, the NFL played three games on Dec. 25, which fell on a Monday. That three-game set averaged 21.9 million viewers (Green Bay Packers at Miami Dolphins was the highest at 25.9 million viewers).

Before 2020, the league had only played 21 total games on Christmas, a day that has historically been dominated on the sports calendar by marquee NBA games. But in the past three seasons, the NFL has played nine matchups on Dec. 25, and commissioner Roger Goodell has indicated the league plans on continuing to play on the holiday.
