Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has confirmed his 26-man squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

Uncapped left-back Ian Maatsen is the headline omission having originally been named in Koeman’s preliminary squad earlier this month.

The 22-year-old Dortmund defender has played every minute of the German club’s path to the final of the Champions League since joining on loan from Chelsea in January.

Versatile Feyenoord midfielder Quenten Timber — brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien — has also been cut alongside , Nick Olij and the injured Atalanta midfielder Marten De Roon.

Former Newcastle United and Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been included despite an indifferent season for Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

Frenkie de Jong missed Barcelona’s final six games of the season through injury but will be given a chance to prove his fitness before the Netherlands’ tournament opener against Poland in Hamburg.

Memphis Depay, who is six goals shy of drawing level with Robin van Persie as his nation’s all-time record goalscorer, is also included despite concerns regarding his fitness.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk is one of seven Premier League representatives.

Brentford’s Mark Flekken, Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven, Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and Liverpool duo Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch complete the Dutch contingent of players plying their trade in English football.

Daley Blind, formerly of Manchester United, has been included after helping Girona qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Koeman, who won 78 caps for his country as a player, is leading the Dutch national team at a major tournament for the first time since he replaced Louis van Gaal as head coach in April 2022.

He will take charge of the Netherlands through to the 2026 World Cup in the Americas.

The Netherlands open up their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland, before facing Group D rivals France and Austria for a place in the last 16.

This summer will be the country’s eleventh appearance at a European Championship. They won the competition in 1988, beating the Soviet Union in the final with a team featuring a 25-year-old Koeman.
