Penn Downs Colgate 27 – 17 For First Win of the Season

The University of Pennsylvania won their first home game of the season defeating the Raiders of Colgate 27 – 17 at Franklin Field. The Quakers have posted six straight wins over the Raiders behind the passing of quarterback Aidan Sayin and the running of Malachi Hosley.

What Penn Was Sayin

Sayin threw for 320 yards completing 29 of 41 passes and three touchdowns with no interceptions. His first touchdown pass came within the first three minutes of the game on the opening drive for the Quakers. Sayin found Bruce Myers for a 15-yard strike. As the first quarter ended Sayin passed to Joshua Casilli with a 4-yard scoring toss.

Once they established the two score lead the Red and Blue stayed in control of the game. Colgate did get to within a touchdown twice. The first came in the second quarter when Zach Osborne ran 31 yards up the middle for their initial score. Penn answered near halftime when Sayin hit Jared Richardson for a 36-yard touchdown pass.

In the third quarter both teams traded field goals. In the final stanza Colgate got to within 24 – 17 when Brady Hutchinson caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Jake Stearney.

Penn ended the scoring when Sam Smith was good on a field goal from 36-yards away.

What the Numbers Say

Quakers sophomore running back Malachi Hosley posted his fifth straight game rushing for 100 or more yards. He gained 131 yards on 17 carries. He is the first Penn running back to do so since Sam Matthews in the 2003 season.

Sayin completed passes to eight different Penn players. Julien Stokes caught the most hauling in 7 passes for 50 yards. Richardson had 6 catches gaining 96 yards.

Shiloh Means led the defense with 10 tackles.

Penn made 27 first downs to 19 for Colgate.

Stearney passed for 229 yards going 31 for 47. One pass was intercepted. It was the first of the season for Penn as Alec Wills stepped in front of the pass.

Treyvhon Saunders was on the receiving end of 16 passes for 123 yards for the Raiders.

Colgate rushed for 114 yards as 6 players gained positive yards on the ground.

Ivy League play is next for the 1 – 1 Quakers. They travel to New Hampshire for a game against Dartmouth.
