Senator JD Vance of Ohio launched a scathing attack on Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her a “phony” and questioning her authenticity during a campaign rally in Glendale, Arizona on Wednesday night.
His comments came just hours after former President Donald Trump made headlines for questioning Harris’s identity during the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago.
Vance, who is running as Trump’s vice presidential pick, criticized Harris for her upbringing and recent changes in her public persona. “Earlier this week, she went down to Georgia and started talking with a fake Southern accent,” Vance said, referring to Harris’s recent campaign appearance. “Kamala Harris grew up in Canada. They don’t talk like that in Vancouver or Quebec. What’s the deal with that?”

Trump had earlier stirred controversy by suggesting that Harris had changed her racial identity for political gain. “She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she became a Black person,” Trump remarked, despite Harris’s longstanding identification as a Black woman, given her Indian-American mother and Jamaican-American father.

Vance, who has previously worked with conservative figures like venture capitalist Peter Thiel, also labeled Harris as a “dangerous San Francisco liberal” and a failed “border czar,” criticizing her role in handling migration issues. He perpetuated claims that migrants without legal status are straining government resources and invited drug cartels into the U.S., despite lacking evidence to support these assertions.
The rally in Arizona saw Vance’s comments met with enthusiastic cheers from the audience, reflecting the heightened tensions and partisan divides in the current political climate.
