MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Superior Health Foundation hosted its annual gala to give to an area nonprofit.

For 13 years, the Superior Health Foundation has partnered with a nonprofit organization for its annual gala. This year, the nonprofit partner was the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center—a nonprofit that advocates for U.P. children who have experienced sexual or physical abuse, or neglect.

Megan Murphy, Superior Health Foundation CEO, said the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center was granted around $15,000 from this event.

“They’re a newer nonprofit in our community but they do serve the entire U.P., and they were chosen because they had applied and put in an application that really touched the hearts of our gala committee,” Murphy said.

Funds will be put toward updating the center’s forensic interview room.

“Even beyond the funding, the faith in us that this shows from Superior Health Foundation is humbling,” said Sarah Zyburt, Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center executive director. “They understand that for the children who are facing abuse and neglect, it is a health issue, and if we can get them healing services now, they won’t have adverse health risks when they’re adults.”

That will prevent children from having to tell their stories more than once.

“Northern Lights opened our doors [in] September of 2023 to meet the needs of the 1 in 6 children in our community facing physical and sexual abuse, neglect and human trafficking,” Zyburt said. “We get to work with the most vulnerable kids, and they are so strong. We’re very lucky.”

Along with presentations about the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center and the Superior Health Foundation, guests spent the evening enjoying food, silent auctions and a comedic hypnotist.

Zyburt says if you’re hurting, you’re not alone. You can call 906-262-0091 day or night for services.

Murphy says thank you to all sponsors, including presenting sponsor Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson.
