The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, met his Iranian counterpart today in New York, Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly. At the center of the agenda, according to a note from the Farnesina, the situation in the Middle East and Tehran’s role at the international level, starting with the war in Ukraine. “I reiterated the Italian government’s strong concern, also on behalf of the G7 partners, for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza as in Lebanon: at the same time, I wanted to underline our strong commitment to prevent a new escalation in Lebanon, in particular along the Blue Line where the Unifil mission operates, which includes about a thousand Italian soldiers”, declared Tajani, recalling that yesterday he chaired an informal meeting of the G7 foreign ministers to take stock of the main international dossiers, starting precisely with the crisis in the Middle East.
The head of Italian diplomacy therefore expressed the hope that Tehran “will exercise its influence on groups in the region, to call them to moderation in all quadrants: Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and the Red Sea”. The minister also expressed condemnation and “strong concern for the transfer of weapons from Iran to Russia”, inviting the Tehran government to “review any decision in this regard”. Closing what was the first in-person meeting between the two counterparts, after the first telephone conversation on August 25, Tajani expressed the hope for “the continuation of a frank dialogue between Rome and Tehran also at the level of the respective embassies”.
