We’re already two weeks into the NFL season, and once again there were plenty of UFL alumni – from both the USFL and XFL – who were able to make an impact for their respective teams.
Jake Bates, Lions: The former Michigan Panthers standout continues to stay perfect in his young NFL career. Bates connected on all three field goal attempts for the Lions this past Sunday against Tampa Bay. He was responsible for 10 of Detroit’s 16 points in their loss to the Buccaneers. Not surprisingly, Jake has been spot on at Ford Field to begin the year.

Brandon Aubrey, Cowboys: While the Cowboys had an ugly offensive day against New Orleans, Brandon Aubrey was fantastic as usual. He was 4-4 on the day, scoring 13 of Dallas’ 19 points. Long field goals are light work for Aubrey at this point, easily knocking through a 52 yarder in this one.

Jeremiah Pharms, Patriots: Pharms, the former Pittsburgh Mauler, has had success with the New England Patriots over the past couple of years. This Sunday, he posted two tackles in their loss to Seattle in overtime.
Daniel Whelan, Packers: Daniel Whelan had a tremendous season with the DC Defenders in 2023, which led to an NFL opportunity with the Packers. He won the job in Training Camp, and has been their punter ever since. Daniel had three punts for 139 total yards in Green Bay’s win, with a long of 59 yards. All three of his punts went inside the Colts’ 20 yard line.
Kavontae Turpin, Cowboys: The former USFL MVP had a quieter day this week compared to last weekend. He had one kick return for 35 yards, and also totaled six offensive yards on three touches.
Final Thoughts
It’s encouraging to see spring football athletes continuing to live out their dreams in the NFL. Without the UFL, USFL, and XFL providing platforms to these players, most of these opportunities wouldn’t have been possible.
