Shaquille O’Neal has been a longtime mentor to WNBA star Angel Reese. The two have become good friends over the years, with their ties to LSU and being two of the all-time greats to ever suit up at the school. On Wednesday evening, Overtime shared a video of Reese making a bet with Shaq on a free throw. She bet him $100,000 that he couldn’t make a free throw.
Unfortunately for her, O’Neal made her pay up after draining the shot.
In case you’re curious, Reese signed a four-year, $324,383 deal with the Chicago Sky. Her average annual salary is listed at $81,096. So, she essentially bet more than $20,000 of her rookie salary.
Reese enjoyed a dominant rookie campaign, tallying 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. She was named to the WNBA All-Rookie team with superstar Caitlin Clark, who brought home 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year honors. Reese was also named an All-Star selection this year. Among other accomplishments, she was the leading rebounder in the WNBA this season.
She also made WNBA history by putting up more than seven double-doubles in a row, the longest streak for a rookie in the league. She shattered the original record set by WNBA legend Candace Parker.
Angel Reese was prolific during her time at LSU
In the 2023-24 season, Reese averaged 18.6 points, 13.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 47.1% from the floor. For her efforts, Reese was named the 2024 SEC Player of the Year. She led LSU on a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, including a statement 78-69 win over No. 2 seed UCLA. In the Tigers’ season-ending loss to national runner-up Iowa, Reese tallied a stunning 17 points and 20 rebounds.
The Baltimore native’s junior season with the LSU Tigers was even more impressive. In Reese’s first year in Baton Rouge, she averaged career-highs of 23.0 points, 15.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per contest while shooting 52.5% from the floor.
Reese sent waves through the women’s basketball world, earning First-Team All-American honors and being named the 2023 Final Four Most Outstanding Player after guiding LSU to a national championship.
